FREE drop-off event for household chemical waste is February 16 at Bay Oaks

On Wednesday, February 16, 2022, the Town will host a free drop-event for household chemical waste in partnership with the Lee County Solid Waste Department.

This collection event will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Bay Oaks Recreational Campus, 2731 Oak Street. Drop off is an easy drive-through process available to all residents managed by Lee County staff.


List of acceptable items

Businesses that need chemical waste disposal can call 239-533-8000 to schedule an appointment for the monthly business collection held at Lee County’s permanent household chemical waste drop-off location. This location is off Metro Parkway in south Fort Myers at 6441 Topaz Court.


Additional collection events are scheduled this year on May 18 and August 17.

Caloosa Carvers at The Mound House
host free public carving demonstrations
 on the first and third Tuesday
of each month through tourism season from 9 a.m. to Noon
Their next Caloosa Carvers Mound House program is Tuesday, February 15, following by sessions on March 1 and 15, before concluding for the year on April 5 and 19. In addition to their free public demonstrations, these talented woodcarvers provide the Mound House with hands-on educational tools for school groups and the general public.

The Town's Marine Resource Task Force (MRTF) will be hosting its Pop-Up Environmental Education Booth at the Shrimp Festival at Lynn Hall Park on March 12 and 13. Local organizations and their volunteers are invited to help with this booth. Here is the schedule of openings:

Parking will be a challenge for this very popular event and volunteers are asked to arrive early and plan on traffic delays. A parking pass for town-owned parking spots will be supplied to volunteers. Parking will also be available within a ten minute walk from Lynn Hall Park.

Booklet cover citizens academy

Inaugural Citizens Academy kicked off this week


First session is in the books

Featuring presentations by Town staff about every department and function of Town Government as well as emergency services and the FMB Library, the first session of the Inaugural Citizens Academy was held on February 9 at Town Hall.

In the next two weekly sessions, participants will enjoy tours of Bay Oaks, Mound House, Newton Beach Park, Matanzas Pass Preserve, and the Downtown District. A chartered boat tour around Estero Island through the Bay and the Gulf is also planned. Town Council will recognize participants at its meeting on March 7.

This Academy is designed to inform and educate interested Fort Myers Beach citizens about Town Government and the public services provided in their Town. The group has 16 participants.

Plans are for this Academy to become a regular occurrence. Watch this newsletter and the Town's website and social media outlets for details.

Basketball court installed at Beach Elementary


As part of the redevelopment for the Bay Oaks Recreational Campus, in exchange for land, the Town made some improvements to the Lee County School Board Property, known as Beach Elementary. Beach Elementary School adjoins Bay Oaks.

Completed improvements include a new outdoor basketball court, sidewalks, covered parking structure, and repaved parking lot. Improvements to come include a new playground structure.

Town Council adopted amendments to the bicycle and vehicle safety ordinance requiring lights and warning devices at its meeting on Monday, Feb. 7, 2022.

Town Council gave the “OK” this week on a design with the Town’s new logo to replace the historic property designation sign. This design will start being used with the next property that is approved for historical designation.
