Household chemical waste collection event on November 6

FREE drop-off event for household chemical waste on November 6 at Bay Oaks

On Friday, Nov. 6, starting at 8 a.m., Town residents will be able to safely and responsibly dispose of household chemical waste (HCW) such as leftover paints, cleaners, herbicides, pesticides, automotive fluids and pool chemicals at Bay Oaks.

Hosted in partnership with Lee County Solid Waste, this no charge collection event will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Bay Oaks Recreation Center, 2731 Oak Street. Drop off is an easy, drive-through process available to all residents.

The Town’s inaugural collection in October 2019 gathered 3,669 pounds of chemicals from 53 residents. The quarterly HCW collection is part of the town’s interlocal agreement with Lee County. This agreement is to provide residents with convenient and responsible disposal of chemicals that might otherwise be harmful to people and the environment.

Businesses that need chemical waste disposal can call 239-533-8000 to schedule an appointment for the monthly business collection held at Lee County’s permanent HCW drop-off location. This location is just off Metro Parkway in south Fort Myers at 6441 Topaz Court.

Additional collection events are also tentatively scheduled in 2021 on February 5, April 30, and August 6. Reminders will be posted on the Town’s website at www.fmbgov.com and social media outlets.

Saturday, November 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mound House, 451 Connecticut Street, Fort Myers Beach

**This is a water based event that requires a personal watercraft**
A very limited amount of available canoes will be at The Mound House. Powerboats can launch (and park trailer for free) from Salty Sam's Marina. Six kayak seats will be available at Salty Sam's.

The Keep Lee County Beautiful Marine Cleanup is an annual event during which volunteers go out to remove monofilament fishing line and other harmful debris from mangrove areas of Lee County. Because of the focus on fishing line, the cleanup event is referred to as Monofilament Madness.

Apply to be a member of the newly-created Nuisance Abatement Board

Interested in serving on Town Council's newly-created Nuisance Abatement Board? Town Council members are seeking applicants who are residents of Fort Myers Beach to fill the seven positions on the board.

To apply, fill out the
Advisory Committee Application and return it to Town Hall, 2525 Estero Boulevard, Fort Myers Beach, 33931. The Town Clerk's office can be contacted at 239-765-0202 to answer questions.

Town Council created this board by approval of Ordinance 20-13 at its meeting on September 21. The board's purpose is to promote, protect, and improve the health, safety and welfare of residents by providing an equitable and effective method to reduce the use of property within the Town for the unlawful sale or delivery of:

  • controlled substances
  • prostitution
  • youth and street gang activity
  • gambling
  • illegal sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages
  • lewd or lascivious behavior
Members will be appointed by Town Council to three-year terms. The ordinance calls for seven members who must be residents of Fort Myers Beach. Each of the five Town Councilors are to appoint a member. The remaining two members are to be appointed collectively for "at large" positions.

One member is required to be a licensed attorney in good standing with the Florida bar, and one member is recommended to be a retired law enforcement officer.
